Dewatering brewer’s grains
Brewer’s grains are the main by-product of the brewing process after fermentation and mashing. They are the solid residue that is left after processing, and consist primarily of barley, although other grains such as wheat, maize and millet might also be present. For years, brewer’s grains have been used as animal feed, but that is not a practical solution for every brewer. Mechanical dewatering using a Flottweg press is the most efficient way of processing the brewer’s grains for recycling. The press dewaters the grains directly from the storage silo, and the resultant solid can be incinerated using biomass firing. Every ton of wet brewer’s grains contains around 1 MWh of thermal energy.
Recovering beer from surplus yeast
Recovering beer from the yeast that is left after fermentation and storage is one of the most valuable applications of the Flottweg Sedicanter or Decanter. Surplus yeast can yield significant quantities of beer – and what is left is high quality yeast, which can be processed and utilised in a range of industries. The result is more economical production, better yield and vastly reduced quantities of waste to deal with.
In years gone by, beer was often served in pewter tankards. Part of the reason for this was so that drinkers could not see what they had been given – with today’s glasses there is nowhere to hide, and nobody wants a cloudy pint. This is a problem with real ales in particular, where there is still yeast present and fermentation continues after brewing.
